IF you visited Numurkah Primary School last Thursday, you could have been excused for thinking you had stepped into another world.

Students, teachers and parents alike were outfitted as their favourite book characters, with works of literature, both old and new, embraced in a riot of imagination and stunning detail.

Students from grades prep to six strutted their stuff in a colourful parade, followed by a parade of teachers and parents who also dressed for the occasion.

Principal Deb Oliver said the annual event is a highlight of the school year.

“The whole school looks forward to it and you can see how much effort families go to to make it special,” she said.

“The costumes were sensational and so creative, they just blew me away. Next year we’ll have more prizes to acknowledge how many amazing costumes there are.”

Student leaders from Numurkah Secondary College acted as guest judges before accompanying the grade prep to two students into town for community reading day.

Grade three to six students remained at school to take part in a range of reading-based activities. 

“It was so good to see everybody embracing reading and identifying a character they wanted  to dress as,” Ms Oliver said.

“Literacy is so important, but it’s fun too, and this is a chance to celebrate that.”
