Numurkah Leader
One up, two down, but a premiership in hand

AFTER finishing the season on top of the ladder, with only one defeat, Numurkah Golf Club’s division one midweek pennant bowlers came home with a hard fought victory over Barooga at Cobram last Friday.

Linda Isted’s rink of Joe Luci, Jenny Sutcliffe and Butch Browning were the heroes of the day in the 74-59 win, easily covering the small losses on the other two rinks to take out the Murray Bowls Division final.

The Golfers only lost one game for the season, going down to Cobram early in the season. Wins over Barooga in both encounters during the season had them quietly confident of victory.

It is the side’s first midweek division one premiership win since 2011, when Golf won both divisions one and two.

Linda’s rink lost just nine ends for the game, and had a resounding 37-13 win, with amazing bowling being displayed for the large crowd.

Robyn Hodgkin, Ian Hocking, Jan Niven and Yvonne Clark started slowly, although leading 6-4 after six ends, but did not win another end until the 12th. They then collected themselves and bowled a very solid four final ends, finally going down 17-21.

Loris Houlihan, Des Staggard, Lyn Browning and Katrina Glover raced out of the blocks to take an 8-1 lead after four ends, however Barooga came back over the next four ends to lead 9-8.

After that, Barooga led all match and won 25-20 but, as was the same with Robyn’s rink, a solid finish to stay in touch meant a great victory overall.

In a nice touch to end the day, Golf member Marie Shannon had been selected to do the medal presentations this year, and was certainly proud to get to present them to her club mates.

Numurkah Golf will now go on to represent Murray in the CGM midweek pennant finals on Tuesday, March 31, at a venue still to be decided.

Picola took out the division two final, defeating Barooga Sports 76-53, with two rink wins and a draw.

Golf’s Maree Luci represented the CGM region at Mulgrave on Sunday and, although giving her all, was defeated by her Footscray opponent.

Second round club 21 up results saw Maree Luci defeat Moira Blake, Katrina Glover defeat Linda Isted, while Helen Pickersgill defeated Yvonne Clark and Kaye Hocking defeated Jenny Connolly.

The semi finals will see Maree take on Katrina, while Helen will play Kaye Hocking.
