RON Smith, men’s captain of Numurkah Golf Club, achieved many a golfer’s dream last Thursday by having his gross stroke score equate with that of his age in years.

Scoring 72 strokes “off the beater” meant Ron accumulated a massive stableford score of 46 points to completely overwhelm second place-getter Peter “Bullant” Cowan, who finished on an otherwise respectable score of 39. 

Other competitors whose score earned themselves a pro ball were: Geoff Partington 38, Bill Padgett 37, Jack Hepworth, John Smith and Bruce Collins all 36, Graeme Sprunt, Bill Green, Les Summerville, Barry Schmedje, Ian Hannaford and John Trimble all 35, Sam Robertson and Will Mason 34.

Club nonagenarian Dick Maloney won the tin of boiled lollies for coming in at the tail of the field with 25 points.

Players whose actions earned them the Mickey Mouse ears this week were Les Summerville and Hugh Gunn. Les won his ears by hitting off at the wrong tee because he got confused by the shotgun start, and Hugh won his because he used his driver six times down the first hole only to have to pick up.

Sharp shooters on the day were: Darryl Sheridan who won the GMCU sponsored ball for nearest the pin on the fourth hole, while Geoff Partington picked up the players’ sweep money on the seventh. Will Mason was closest to the pin on the 14th and picked up a ball supplied by Roy and Dennis.

No player was capable of landing on the 15th green, enabling sponsor Graeme Sprunt to win a reprieve, but Pruden Carpentry coughed up again because Pete Cowan was having a day out and put his tee shot within a metre.
