Gary’s first ace

ON what started out as a nice day for golf until the winds picked up, Garry Hosie had a day he will remember for the rest of his life, scoring a hole-in-one on the seventh.

Garry was having a somewhat ordinary round, and had a horror sixth when he shanked a ball into the dam from 25 metres out, but he shook off his bad hole and stepped up on the seventh feeling just a little bit of angst.

He then hit a perfect nine-iron shot that took its first bounce just on the front of the green, rolled up nicely and fell in the hole.

Not certain whether it had gone in the hole or over the back of the green, as often happens with holes-in-one, Garry and his playing partners made the walk up to the green full of suspense, to find the ball nestled securely beside the flagstick in the hole.

Garry said it has taken him 48 years to achieve what is every golfer’s dream.

Saturday’s golf was a Compusult monthly medal round, and it was Roy Peterson who had aday out, winning his second monthly medal shirt in two weeks.

Roy had a great start to his round, with two pars and a birdie, and finished the day with a great score of 66 nett, knocking out two other golfers who finished with scores that would normally have been good enough to win.

In fact, Roy could have had anything, noting that his score included a lost ball on the fifth, and a ball in the dam on the sixth that added a few shots to his score. He did a great job to then grit his teeth and hold on to complete a great round.

Runner-up to Roy in B grade was Col Stone, who won a countback on 69 nett.

The winner in A grade was Bob I’Anson, with a great score of 67 nett. Bob’s handicap has risen a bit lately, as he has not been hitting the ball too well, but that certainly changed on Saturday.

Garry Hosie continued on with some good golf after his ace on the seventh to come in with a fine 68 nett and take the A grade runner-up placing.

Balls down the line went to Matt Ebborn and Neville Smith with 69 nett, Barry Pruden and Sam Robertson on 70,  and Mark Hegarty and Chris Reynolds on 71.

Bill Green’s shot to the fourth hole finished just on the front of the green, but was good enough to win nearest the pin and the players’ jackpot.

No-one got closer than Garry Hosie on the seventh, although Paul Collins tried to one-up his hole-in-one, for some reason marking his name down on the marker after playing a nice shot to the green.

Paul Arnel didn’t feature amongst the winners, but at least played the back nine par threes well, winning both nearest the pins on the 15th and 18th.

Three sets of Mickey Mouse ears were handed out on Saturday, one going to Paul Collins for his misdemeanour on the seventh.

The second set went to Garry Hosie for his shank into the dam on the sixth, and the third pair went to Rod ‘Rocket’ Campbell for hitting his tee shot on the 18th onto the roof of one of the cabins.

There was a good turnout for last Wednesday’s chicken run, which allowed for prizes to be awarded in three grades.

John Smith had the score of the day, with a terrific 31 nett, to win A grade, well clear of Matt Ebborn on 36.

Brad Tweed got away with an easy win, his 38 nett good enough to win B grade ahead of Mark Hegarty on 39, while Rob Lowrie had a great score of 34 nett to win C grade. Alex Gattuso was runner-up with 39 nett.

Paul Collins won nearest the pin on the 18th hole.

This Saturday’s golf will be a stableford round, but there are some big events coming up before Christmas.

The following weekend will be a big one, beginning with the annual pro-am event on Friday, December 13, followed the next day by the Christmas fourball, and the club members’ Christmas party.

David Ludington has also put up the list for entries for the 2020 Hoax Triples event in March, and anyone interested in playing is asked to get their name up as soon as possible.
