NUMURKAH Golf Club champion Andrew Storer has taken out the ultimate prize in the Goulburn Murray region, winning the champion of champions event at Barooga on Sunday.

Having not played a round of golf since the pennant finals a month ago, Storer thought he hadn’t done enough with a round of 75, but it proved good enough to get him into a play-off against Cobram-Barooga champion Caleb Bovalino.

Storer got off to a good start, being one under par after five holes, but threw in a couple of double bogeys to close out the front nine.

In the end, he birdied the 18th to finish three over and make it into the play-off.

“Conditions were tough, with some tricky pin placements, and it was windy, but I thought you would need to finish par to have any chance. Obviously everyone else found conditions tough too,” Storer said.

The play-off went to the second hole.

“We both parred the first hole, and then Caleb got into trouble with his drive, and ended up in the bunker, and couldn’t make it up and down.

“I parred it, and it was game over.”

Strazz has won a record nine Numurkah club championships, and this is his second champion of champions title, having previously won it in 2011.

Sunday’s event also included the Goulburn Murray Championship and, while not a given, it is fairly common for the champion to also win the impressive trophy, which Storer did this year.
